Locals protest with nine days to go for demolition of Kochi flats

Earlier, the authorities had decided to carry out ‘controlled implosion’ to bring down about 10 lakh sq feet concrete structures. Experts say controlled implosion is an accepted demolition technique in which explosives will be placed on strategic spots of structures and ignited to raze within its perimeters.

Local people living around the building complex in Kochi said their dwellings had developed cracks and they would deteriorate further after the explosion. They have started a hunger strike against the district authorities for ignoring their safety concerns.(PTI PHOTO.)

Demolition of Kochi flats to begin on Oct 11, three bidders shortlisted

In the last hearing on September 27, the Supreme Court had directed the state to demolish these flats in 138 days. The state government tried its best to avoid demolition but later fell in line after the apex court threatened to start contempt proceeding against it for not implementing its May verdict.

The Maradu municipality issued a fresh notice to occupants of the flats saying both water and power connections would be cut in two days and advised them to shift at the earliest. But the residents stood their ground saying they will not shift on their own.
