Bengal House passes bill to amend law on appointment of V-Cs

The West Bengal legislative assembly passed a bill to amend laws on the appointment of vice-chancellors of state-run universities, sparking opposition from the BJP. The bill proposes the formation of a five-member search committee with representatives from the governor, the University Grants Commission, the chief minister, the state government, and the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education. The BJP claims the legislation gives the state government complete control over the education system, while the government argues it is following UGC rules. The bill will require the governor's assent to become law.
