Won’t allow immersion in Aarey Colony lakes: State assures HC

A state counsel, who also represented the chief executive officer of Aarey Colony, informed the division bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and justice Arif Doctor that “no permission shall be granted for immersion of idols in the lakes of Aarey Colony, keeping in view the provisions contained in notification dated December 15, 2016 issued by the Central Government and the guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board on May 12, 2020”

In response, the BMC is preparing alternative arrangements for Ganpati immersions. Rajesh Akre, the assistant commissioner of the P South Ward, said, “There will be three floating talaos in Aarey for all domestic idols of height below 4 feet, one at the West gate, another at the Picnic spot and one will be mobile on the road in Dinkar Rao Desai Marg. State appoints 17-member panel for development of Aarey Colony

The Maharashtra government has formed a 17-member committee to oversee the development of Aarey Milk Colony. The move has sparked controversy as the MLA from Jogeshwari, under which the majority of Aarey falls, has not been appointed to the panel. The committee will examine a consultant's report and recommend changes to make Aarey encroachment-free and develop it as a tourism spot without disturbing the ecosystem. The government plans to monetise the land parcels at Aarey Colony and Worli through commercial development.

Attempts by citizens’ groups to get the government to shift the Metro-3 rail depot from Aarey Milk Colony have not been successful so far, with the courts allowing the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to cut trees at the site. In the past, this column has pointed out that protests by citizens were focused on the 33-hectare depot for the underground SEEPZ-Colaba Metro at the 3,160-acre (1,281 ha) Aarey Milk Colony.
