Metro construction leading to waterlogging in Aarey: Residents

The depot site, it has been previously pointed out, is riven by at least three perennial streams whose paths have likely been altered by the carshed’s development

Environmentalists have highlighted several times that the depot plot is functionally the only remaining floodplain of the Mithi River in Aarey Colony, a position which has been contested by the Mumbai Metropolitan Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL). The interaction of the river with this open space is crucial for the survival of this ecosystem, and to prevent flooding in other parts of the city. (HT PHOTO)

Preserving Aarey can reduce impacts of climate change affecting Mumbai

Aarey Colony has all the necessary ingredients to contribute to a majority of the 17 SDGs, as we have demonstrated, which will also benefit other parts of the city. For instance, further construction work in Aarey can adversely impact ecosystem services such as pollination, soil building, carbon sequestration, disease, temperature, and flood control

‘MMRCL’s tally of additional 177 trees in Aarey Colony an undercount’

MMRCL has been given permission to cut 177 trees for a shunting area for Metro-3 trains in Mumbai's Aarey Colony, however, the number is considered an undercount. Environmentalists and Adivasis living near the project site say that the total number of "unnumbered" trees is between 90 and 100, which have not been given permission to be felled. The Supreme Court has criticised MMRCL for its attempts to "overreach" its orders and imposed a fine of INR10 lakh ($13,245) on the company.

Further felling of trees in Aarey will destroy sustenance of remaining Adivasis

The Bhoyes, whose eviction has been stayed by a 2018 High Court order, are now the only family from Prajapur to continue practicing indigenous land use; harvesting fruits, tubers and a few vegetables for personal consumption and sale. The natural resources that allow them to do so are now under threat, with the MMRCL prepared to fell 124 trees in the area, of which 75 are tended to by the Bhoyes.

Mumbai, India - April 11, 2023: Contrary to what many believe, the 177 additional trees that the MMRCL is now seeking to cut in Aarey Colony for Metro-3, are not actually located in the contentious depot plot. They can be found some distance away on a hillock in Prajapur Pada, an Adivasi settlement, which has been practising agriculture and horticulture on project affected lands for decades. At least 75 of the earmarked trees, including jamun, jackfruit, chickoo and banana varieties, are situated on the land of the Bhoye family, belonging to the Kokna Scheduled Tribe, in Mumbai, India, on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
