Make Amritsar drug-­free: MP Aujla to administration, police

On reaching Amritsar after taking oath in the Parliament, Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar Gurjit Singh Aujla held a marathon meeting with the police and civil administration officials, instructing them to make Amritsar drug-free and ensure maintenance of law and order.

Aujla, along with deputy commissioner (DC) Kamaldeep Sangha and police commissioner Nageshwara Rao met many officials at the Circuit House, and informed them about the priorities of the government. He stressed on zero tolerance to drug issues.

Talking to the media during a press conference here, the Amritsar MP said, “Clear instructions have been given to the police to up the ante against drug menace, target the smugglers and not harass the consumers during the anti-drug drive.”

Putting safety of locals and tourists as top priority of his agenda, the MP said, “Police have been asked to beef up the vigil so that people do not suffer due to crimes such as snatching and theft. Tourists visit Amritsar from round the globe, so their safety should be among our top priorities.”

“If tourists are harassed or looted, it affects the image of Amritsar. So, it is the job of police to eradicate crime and keep the tourists safe. I have asked the police to start working on tourism police, with dedicated chambers at key locations in the city,” added Ajla. He further said that he is ready to contribute from his MP-LAD funds for CCTV camera installations in the city.

’WILL TRY TO REHABILITATE BEGGARS’

The MP also initiated a campaign to make Amritsar beggar-free.

“I have asked the officials to ensure that the campaign is a success. It is a Guru Nagri and beggars at every place give a bad impression to the visitors,” he said.

“We will take steps in this direction and will arrange for employment of those who voluntarily leave begging,” he said.“Though the district administration has already made

Ren Baseras in the city, but efforts will be to curb this completely,” he added.

BETTER BASIC FACILITIES

Aujla also asked the officers to ensure better facilities to be provided to the people of the city. He said that he can give grant from MP-LAD fund, but no lax approach should be adopted in implementation.

He said that efforts will be made to have street lights installed from India Gate roundabout to Attari border.

FOLLOW PROTOCOL

On being asked if Rajya Sabha MP Shwet Malik is holding meeting with airport officials, Aujla said, “I think everyone should follow the protocol. It is my domain to hold meeting with airport officials. I will only say that the Rajya Sabha MP should not do it.”
