PUNE: The Pune metropolitan region development authority (PMRDA) has decided to charge ₹20,000 water cess for each upcoming flat at Wagholi and other areas that face water shortage in the region.
Kiran Gitte, PMRDA metropolitan commissioner, said on Wednesday that realtors will soon have to pay the fees to obtain building permission.
The commissioner said that the fund will be utilised for setting up water system infrastructure in these areas. Many villages around Pune which are not part of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations are struggling with drinking water shortage.
With most builders unable to provide homebuyers in these areas with adequate water supply, PMRDA has decided to charge ₹20,000 for each upcoming flat in Wagholi and other areas while granting the building permission.
The authority will set up water supply system in these areas with the help of local gram panchayat. Water facility will be provided by PMRDA till the main gate of the residential societies and the builder will have to erect internal pipelines.
Builders, who had put forward the suggestion to charge for water facility, have in principle accepted the amount as it addresses the issue of water scarcity.
“The work on setting up the ₹5 crore water scheme at Wagholi by drawing water from Vadu Budruk will begin soon,” Gitte said.
