Biker hit by car, Mumbai cop sees him lying unconscious on CCTV, sends help, saves his life

An alert woman constable in the main control room at Mumbai police headquarters helped saved the life of a 26-year-old motorcyclist involved in a hit-and-run at Walkeshwar junction on Sunday night.

Around 9.30pm, constable Jyoti Mugalghat was monitoring CCTV cameras in Walkeshwar when she saw a car hit a motorcycle at the junction. The driver didn’t stop after knocking down the biker, who appeared to be unconscious. Mugalghat immediately telephoned Gamdevi police station and told officials there about the hit-and-run.

The Gamdevi police sent out an alert, and within five minutes an assistant sub-inspector and two constables were on the scene. They found the biker lying on the road, unconscious.

An officer from Gamdevi police station, who did not wish to be named, said, “After the police station was informed, assistant sub-inspector Ashok Khenjale and constables Sarla Andhale and Kailash Patil were dispatched to the spot. They found the victim unconscious and took him to Bhatia Hospital.”

The biker, Malabar Hill resident Deepak Dalvi, regained consciousness in a few hours and was discharged around midnight. However, no police case was filed as Dalvi refused to register a complaint after learning that the driver of the car was a friend from his neighbourhood.

An officer, who did not wish to be named, said, “We learnt the identity of the driver from the car’s registration number and informed Dalvi after he regained consciousness. However, he refused to register a complaint with us as the car driver was his friend from Malabar Hill.”

Deputy commissioner of police Dr Rashmi Karandhikar said, “Our CCTV operator has done very good work by saving the biker’s life. As soon as she saw that he was down and unconscious, she informed the concerned police station. Thanks to the prompt response of the patrolling police officials, his life was saved.”

Karandhikar added that Mugalghat’s work was worthy of an award and that he would recommend her name to the joint commissioner of police (law and order).
