Rajasthan: Student expelled for refusing to work as domestic help

A Class 10 student in Rajasthan was allegedly expelled for refusing to work as a domestic help in the house of a teacher of the school, an official said on Wednesday.

Lalu Singh, a student of Bhimarlai Government Secondary School in Barmer, in a complaint has claimed that the school authorities have allegedly expelled him as he refused to carry on doing daily household chores in the teacher’s house, said Balotra sub divisional officer Udaibhanu Charan.

“We are investigating the matter. We questioned the school’s principal, who said that the boy was expelled for bad conduct,” he said. “The ground on which the school authorities have expelled the student was not justified. Action will be taken.”

The boy said that since his admission to Class 6, he was forced to work as a domestic help in the teacher’s house, said Charan quoting the complaint.

In the complaint, the boy claimed that while his classmates were busy attending school, he was forced to work at teacher's house.

The boy claimed that he was beaten up by the teacher whenever he refused to work.

“When I refused work as a domestic help anymore, the teacher not only threatened me but on July 13 expelled me from the school with the help of the principal, the boy said in his complaint (A copy of which is with HT).

Villagers also requested the school authorities to reconsider the matter but they did not agree to take him back, he said in his complaint.

Principal of the school Poonamchand Choudhary, however, denied the allegation that boy was forced to work as a domestic help, saying he was expelled for the bad conduct.

“Now that the sub divisional officer of Balotara has sought a report on the boy’s expulsion, we will follow his directions,” he said.

The boy met the district education officer in Barmer and sought his intervention in the matter.
