I FEEL concerned when I see hyphenated names of products, like Maruti-Suzuki, Hero-Honda, Shriram-Honda? this proves Indians don?t believe in their abilities, says former UGC chairman professor Yashpal. There is no link between requirement of our industry and IIT course. Brain drain from IITs will continue because the IIT course is designed on the syllabus of foreign countries. Until we design a course useful for our industries, the IITs would be of no use, he said addressing students in Modern School Aliganj on Tuesday.

“There is no link between requirement of our industry and IIT course. Brain drain from IITs will continue because the IIT course is designed on the syllabus of foreign countries. Until we design a course useful for our industries, the IITs would be of no use,” he said addressing students in Modern School Aliganj during COGNITO-2006 on Tuesday.
“Not only IITs but we need to change the education system. We require a national curriculum, which should concentrate on whole development of the students rather than making them learn stupid things which are of no use in life,” said Yashpal.
“It’s a shame that officials of various companies boast of their imported products by saying that we are the one who brought this technology to the country. Instead they should raise the slogan we are the one who invented this technology,” he said and added, “We still continue to carry on colonial mindset that inventions can only be done by foreigners. Nothing is better than trying things by self.
The professor is all for coordination between the various streams of science. “Here in India we follow the caste system in science, a physicist never talks to a chemist, and a sonologist never talks to a physician that’s why we were unable to invent so many simple things in India. We need to have better coordination between various branches of science to make a progress as a nation. As there is difference between storage of information and use of knowledge,” said Yashpal. He said television channels present all the trash for students but they never make a programme like Turning Point. Which was most popular science show of its time. “Channel people still come and talk to me about that show but they never make a programme like that to create scientific temper amongst the students,” said Yashpal.
He appreciated the efforts like Children’s Science Congress where young students learn to conduct experiments in field and write the reports. Children are more innovative than elders, they are more curious than others he said.
The innovative approach and involvement like science congress can change to shape of the country, said Yashpal.
