THE CITY will have a new medical college and a super specialty hospital soon. Both will be part of the upcoming Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Gomti Nagar.

Earlier, the State Government has decided to set up satellite centre of the SGPGIMS in the premises of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Now, the centre called RMLIMS will be developed as an autonomous centre.
Though the RMLIMS is being developed with cooperation and expert guidance of SGPGIMS, but care has been taken to avoid overlapping of specialties in both the institutes. Only those departments will be common in which the existing infrastructure is falling short of the current demand of the people.
Secretary, Medical Education Prashant Trivedi says RMLIMS will be both supplementary as well as complimentary of the PGIMS. It will be developed as centre of teaching and training in selected medical discipline. It would function like UP Rural Medical Sciences and Research Institute, Saifai, he said.
Along with a teaching cadre, the institute will have a governing body, financial committee and other academic body on the pattern of PGIMS. The institute will have a 500-beded hospital.
According to the plan, the RMLIMS will start post-graduate and post-doctoral courses in 2007. A full-fledged medical college will be set up in the institute in 2008. The college will have 50 seats in MBBS course. The medical college will have various departments including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Medical Jurisprudence, Preventive and Social Medicine. Specialty Department includes Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetric and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dental, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology and Transfusion Medicine.
The super specialty departments in RMLIMS will have departments like Burns and Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Dental Surgery, Gastro Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Medicine, Anesthesiology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Nephrology, Urology, Rental Transplantation and Nuclear Medicine.
The present 110-bed hospital run by the Medical Health Department having 15 departments will be either merged in the institute or will function as a separate OPD unit managed by the Medical Health Department.
