Under a new initiative, the varsity authorities— for the first time in AU's 119-year-old history— have decided to fully computerise the admission process for all of its seven boys and four girls' hostels.

The authorities have also decided to go ahead and create a database of all of its hostellers so as to improve the management of the hostels from the current academic session itself.

"The plan is to have a systematic hostel admission schedule that will help us ensure their proper governance during the rest of the year too. For this, the admissions will be done with the help of computers this year and we have already completed the formalities for a smooth operation," informed AU Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof Jagdamba Singh.

Prof Singh said that as students apply for hostel accommodations and are allotted rooms, their entries will be computerised. Be it a UG student applying for a hostel accommodation at the counter at Pravesh Bhawan or a PG student applying at the DSW office, their detailed information will be stored on AU computers.

"Once they are allotted rooms, their room number, details of the fee deposited as well as course for which they have been admitted in the varsity and details of their next of kin will be available to us at a click of a mouse. This will help us keep a tab on a particular student if we want. We will be able to locate a student and identify his hostel and the room allotted to him during an emergency and also know whether any outstanding dues are pending against him or her," Prof Singh said.

He said that a meeting of all the hostel wardens and superintendents was held at the DSW office recently.

"We have chalked out a detailed plan under which the wardens and the superintendents of each hostel will ensure that the DSW office gets a detailed listing of all vacant rooms of their hostels respectively at the earliest for timely admissions. We plan to complete room allotments of UG students in first phase and the PG students in the next for all our hostels," he informed.

Prof Jagdamba Singh said in preparations of the admissions, all toilets and the bathrooms of the hostels have been renovated from the funds allotted by the varsity for the purpose.

"The drainage and the sewer system of the hostels too have been improved for the benefit of the students," he added.
