Projects posed to decongest Gurgaon still on paper
People across the NCR travel to Gurgaon every day as many corporate firms have their head offices in the city. But, the road infrastructure in Gurgaon is clearly inadequate for the volume of traffic that the city has to handle every day.
People across the NCR travel to Gurgaon every day as many corporate firms have their head offices in the city. But, the road infrastructure in Gurgaon is clearly inadequate for the volume of traffic that the city has to handle every day.

Over the years, many projects have been proposed to decongest the city but several of them are still on paper. Some of the proposed projects are as follows:
Underpasses on NH-8
Three underpasses have been proposed at Rajiv Chowk, Iffco Chowk and Signature Tower.
The Rajiv Chowk underpass is designed with two straight signal-free roads from Old Gurgaon Road towards Sohna Road, and a loop underpass is planned from Medicity Road to New Delhi at the existing U-turn.
The design of the Signature Tower Chowk underpass also consists of two straight roads crossing NH-8 from Maharana Pratap Chowk to Huda City Centre with lanes for two and three-wheelers.
The third underpass proposed at Iffco Chowk will cross the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway from Sukhrali village towards MG Road.
Additional routes linking NH 8
Recently, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar gave approval to the NHAI in principal to a project proposed to connect Nelson Mandela (NM) Marg with NH-8 through a 4-km stretch that will pass through Ghitorni, Vasant Kunj and Garden Estate Apartments in Gurgaon.
There are two options to extend the road. One is to cut the ridge after which the road can be directly connected to NH-8 near Ambience Mall. If the ridge cannot be cut because of environmental issues, then NM Marg can be extended till MG Road
The third route will connect MG Road to NH-8 via Ambience Mall road. This route will go via the outer boundary of DLF’s colonies in sectors 24 and 25, and meet MG Road near Arjangarh. Currently, MG Road meets NH-8 at Iffco Chowk.
Five-lanes at Kherki Daula Toll Plaza
To quell congestion at the Kherki Daula toll plaza, the NHAI has directed the concessionaire, Millennium City Expressways Private Ltd (MCEPL), to construct five additional lanes. The new lanes will help cut down the waiting time by more than half-an-hour during peak hours.
Dedicated Hawker Zones
The Municipal Corporation Gurgaon (MCG) has earmarked 31 hawking zones across the city.
The project will set up zones – hawking and non-hawking zones and restricted area (where hawking will be allowed only for a restricted time) -- as per the necessity of each area. The move is aimed at curtailing snarls that result from roads being encroached upon by vendors.
The civic body has identified 14,174 street hawkers in a recent survey. Hawker zones will be set up at new and old Railway roads, bus stand road, gurudwara road, railway station, Mehrauli road, Sukrali, Jharsa road, Sector 10, Pataudi road, Kanhai village, Nathupur and Sector 56.
NPR
The delayed Northern Peripheral Road (NPR) or Gurgaon-Dwarka Expressway will provide an alternative access between New Delhi and Gurgaon. It will ease traffic on NH-8 and MG Road.
The 150-metre wide 18-km long NPR is an important road in the development plan of the Gurgaon-Manesar Urban Complex linking Dwarka and southwest Delhi with Gurgaon-Manesar and beyond.
SPR
The Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), a 150-metre wide road, is aimed at expanding the connectivity with New Gurgaon. This 16 km-long road will connect Golf Course Extension Road with NH-8 and intersect Sohna Road at Badshahpur.
