The city recorded a minimum temperature of 8.4°C on Sunday and Met officials said that it is likely to fall by another two degrees on Monday. The city’s maximum temperature on Sunday was 25°C.

Residents woke up to partly cloudy skies on Monday and a strong wind buffeted the city through the day. The Met officials said that a cold wave from the Himalayas will drag the mercury down in the city on Monday and the day after.

Officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the city might also be hit by thunderstorms and dust storms at night or in the wee hours over the next couple of days and commuters have been advised to take caution and drive carefully on highways and expressways.

“The western disturbance, which is currently passing over west Rajasthan, is bringing rainfall over the northern plains and snowfall in the western Himalayan region. Thunderstorms and hailstorms are likely to hit the region over the next couple of days and they will be accompanied by lightning as well. The temperature in the northern plains, which had risen over the last few days, will drop again,” an IMD official said.

The city sky remained overcast for the better part of the day and it was only after 12.30pm that the sun peeked through the clouds. Residents were spotted enjoying the hint of chill in the air and were bundled up in warm woollens to keep out the cold breeze.

With cold winds sweeping the city on Sunday and the Met forecasting a further drop in temperature over the next couple of days, doctors have advised residents not to step out in the event of rain as they might risk catching a viral. Doctors at the Civil Hospital in Gurgaon said that with a sudden shift in the city’s weather, viruses are likely to multiply affecting people with low immunity.

“Most viruses and bacteria tend to breed during this season. Residents should avoid eating out, to the extent possible, at this time of the year,” BK Rajora, chief medical officer, Civil Hospital, said.

Doctors warned that in the event of rain, the city might also see a spurt in cases of dengue and malaria.
