The move was initiated after MCG received several complaints from residents and RWAs stating that garbage was not being removed from various parts across the city.

The proposal has been sent to the civic body’s finance committee (F&CC) for clearance, a senior official said.

According to an official of the MCG, the system was earlier installed in a few vehicles of the MCG on a trial basis. The results of the trial were positive and the authorities decided to go ahead and install GPS in all commercial vehicles, including tipper trucks and earthmovers.

Apart from providing information regarding the location of the vehicle, the system will also provide information regarding the distance that the vehicle has covered in the day and the routes it undertook. The time for garbage collection and disposal will also be monitored.

Additional commissioner Amit Khatri said, “This will help the authorities know whether vehicles are being misused by sanitation workers against their deputed work.”

Khatri added that the system will be installed on the MCG’s official website: www.mcg.gov.in and open to the public who will be able to check the position of the vehicles.

According to an official, the use of GPS will not be limited to garbage trucks. The installation will be expanded to all civic vehicles in the future. The initiative can lead to a better planning of routes, frequency and fuel management.

In the first stage, the administration will place the tracking system in all vehicles of the solid waste management department. In the second stage, vehicles from other departments will be included.
