Elections highlights | 'Our bulldozers have made Uttar Pradesh riot-free': UP CM Adityanath in Gujarat rally

Gujarat assembly elections are scheduled for December 1 and 5, with counting of votes and announcement of results on December 8. Meanwhile, the Delhi MCD polls will be held on December 4 and the results will be released on December 7. The BJP is currently in power in both Gujarat and the Delhi MCDs.

The election season is here, and Gujarat and Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) are only days away from heading to key polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules in both Gujarat and the Delhi MCDs is aiming to make a comeback.  Considered as the BJP's bastion for their control over the state for over two decades, Gujarat is the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah. The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are also in the running in the state. Several leaders of all the three political parties have already campaigned in the state, including BJP's star campaigner PM Modi. Meanwhile, in Delhi, the BJP and the AAP have been involved in war of words pertaining to the elections. Kejriwal's side has focused on garbage issues and poor sanitation in the run up to the polls, while the BJP - that has been ruling the MCDs for 15 years - has released a “12 point” manifesto, including addressing garbage matters, accommodation to slum dwellers and schools, among others.

Gujarat assembly elections are scheduled for December 1 and 5. A total of 1,621 candidates are in the fray for 182 seats in the Gujarat assembly. In the first phase of the polls, as many as 788 candidates will contest for 89 constituencies. In Phase-2, a total of 833 candidates will contest for 93 seats. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the counting of votes and announcement of the results of the Gujarat assembly elections will happen on December 8.

Delhi MCD polls are scheduled for December 4 and the announcement of results will happen on December 7. Of the total nominations, as many as 507 independents are present - the highest share - followed by the AAP with 492 candidates. The BJP has filed 423 candidates, followed by 334 from Congress, 149 from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), 31 from the JD(U), 20 from AIMIM, and nine from the CPI(M).
