The Election Commission of India has banned the sharing of exit polls between February 10 and March 7 and prohibited media organisations - print and electronic - from conducting or publishing predictions for election results during the mentioned period. "No person shall conduct any exit poll and publish or publicize by means of print or any other manner, the result of any exit poll," the poll body said in its order.

As a result, the exit polls will be reuttarleased after 6:30pm when the final phase of voting concludes in Uttar Pradesh.

What are exit polls and how is it conducted?

Exit polls are predictions made by media organisations using random or systematic sampling methods that forecast winners of elections before the result is out. Predictions are usually built on the basis of questions asked to voters - like which party they voted for and why.

Once all the samples are collected, these organisations decode the political trend for a fair idea on which party or candidate is likely to win from which constituency.
