The New Delhi constituency witnessed an intense electoral contest with key candidates including Arvind Kejriwal from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Sandeep Dikshit representing the Indian National Congress (INC).
The counting of votes in the crucial constituency, along with 69 others for the Delhi Assembly election, began at 8 am.
According to the Election Commission of India, the constituency recorded a voter turnout of 56.41 per cent. The outcome of this crucial seat will become clear as the votes are counted.
The counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly elections is being held today, determining whether AAP secures a fourth consecutive term or if the BJP returns to power in the national capital after over 26 years.
Key candidates (New Delhi constituency)- Result
Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) - 25, 999votes
Parvesh Verma (BJP) - 30, 088 votes
Sandeep Dikshit (Congress) - 4,568 votes
Who won the 2020 election?
• In the 2020 Assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal secured victory for AAP by defeating BJP’s Sunil Kumar Yadav with a margin of 21,687 votes.
• The New Delhi Assembly segment falls under the broader New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, where BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj won decisively in the 2024 general elections, defeating AAP’s Somnath Bharti by 78,370 votes.
• Kejriwal had held this seat since 2013 when he made headlines by defeating Congress veteran Sheila Dikshit by over 25,000 votes. In 2015, he retained the seat with a lead of nearly 32,000 votes over BJP’s Nupur Sharma and Congress’ Kiran Walia.
• Historically, Congress has won the seat four times since 1977, while AAP has emerged victorious three times.
How have the BJP and Congress performed over the years?
• The BJP, which has not won the New Delhi seat since 1977, aims to make a strong statement by defeating former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in this high-profile contest.
• For the Congress, the battle holds symbolic significance, as Sandeep Dikshit's mother, former CM Sheila Dikshit, lost this seat to Kejriwal. Despite Congress' past alliances with AAP, Dikshit has been a vocal critic of Kejriwal and will be looking to avenge his mother’s defeat.
• A victory for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections would mark its return to power in the capital after more than 26 years, ending AAP and Kejriwal’s decade-long dominance that the party has been aiming to break.
• Meanwhile, the Congress, which governed Delhi for 15 consecutive years until 2013, is working to regain lost ground after failing to secure a single seat in the last two elections.

New Delhi election result LIVE: Meme overload on social media as BJP seals victory, AAP suffers crushing defeat in Delhi
New Delhi election result LIVE: The tables have turned, and so have the memes. With the BJP poised to oust AAP from power in the Delhi elections, social media erupted on Saturday with a series of hilarious posts referencing Arvind Kejriwal's bold statement that Narendra Modi would need another life to win the capital.
Kejriwal's 2023 remark -- "I want to tell Narendra Modi ji that you will have to take another birth to defeat us in Delhi" -- was intended as a show of confidence but has now become a viral punchline.
A viral video mimicking a sack race humorously captured the situation, with the BJP racing toward victory, the Congress lost in its own direction, and AAP trailing behind the ruling party.
One popular meme circulating shows Rahul Gandhi at a petrol station, asking a customer to check 'zero' — a pointed reference to his party’s consistent failure to secure any seats in three consecutive Delhi elections.

On Saturday, the BJP dominated the AAP, reclaiming power in Delhi after more than 26 years, expanding its influence and dealing a crushing blow to the party, as its top leadership faltered or barely held on.
Sai attributed the success to the dedicated efforts of BJP workers under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president J P Nadda.
In a post on X, Sai wrote, “Delhi ke dil me Modi (Modi in the heart of Delhi).”
Referring to the win as historic, he added, “This victory is the victory of the tireless work of the workers under the able guidance of the successful Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and the national president Jagat Prakash Nadda ji and the unwavering faith of the people in the BJP.”
New Delhi election result LIVE: AAP grapples with corruption, infrastructure woes, and governance concerns that led to poll losses
New Delhi election result LIVE: Allegations of corruption involving its leaders, ongoing disputes with the lieutenant governor over governance issues, and a strong campaign by the BJP led to AAP's defeat in the Delhi Assembly polls, the results of which were announced on Saturday.
The most significant blow to AAP was the defeat of its key leaders – Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain – in their respective constituencies, marking a major setback for the party that had risen to power on an anti-corruption agenda.
This election marks a turning point for AAP, as it will now serve as the opposition in Delhi for the first time since its formation. Despite their confidence in retaining power, the party's image was severely impacted by corruption allegations against top leaders and a vigorous campaign by the BJP, which labelled Kejriwal and others as corrupt.

Sharma, a former Uttar Pradesh deputy CM, posted a message in Hindi on X: "Even Ravana's ego did not last long, @ArvindKejriwal ji is but a very ordinary man."
He further praised the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, saying, "Under the charismatic leadership of Modi ji, BJP workers not only defeated him and his leaders in this birth but his arrogant ally in Uttar Pradesh also had to face a huge defeat in Milkipur. This is why they say Shri Ram's 'leela' is incomparable. Jai Shri Ram," while sharing a video of Kejriwal.

Puri told ANI, "They (AAP) tried to fool the people of Delhi for 10 years and did not even give the people what they could have given. AAP will disintegrate in its current form because the control is with Kejriwal. You ask Atishi, how much freedom to make decisions she has."
Commenting on the consequences of AAP's defeat in Delhi, the Union Minister also pointed out that the party's influence over Punjab would weaken. He added that AAP's loss in Delhi paves the way for BJP to take power in the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
