The chief minister is likely to head to New Delhi to meet prime minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party president JP Nadda on Sunday to discuss the formation of the new government. This may also pave the way for convening of the BJP legislature party meeting and set in motion the process for the formation of the new government.

Yogi Adityanath met governor Anandiben Patel on Friday to tender his resignation as per formalities. Earlier Adityanath also chaired the last meeting of his outgoing cabinet and thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh for extending their support to the BJP in the state assembly election.

Yogi Adityanath will be the first Uttar Pradesh chief minister (in the state's seven decades of elections) to retain power after completing a full term. None of the previous chief ministers, including the BJP's main rival in this election - Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav - were able to return to power.

The BJP won 255 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. Its allies, Apna Dal (S) and Nishad Party, bagged 12 seats and six seats, respectively.

The Samajwadi Party won 111 seats and its alliance partners, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal, got six and eight seats, respectively. The Congress and the Jansatta Dal got two seats each and the Bahujan Samaj Party bagged one.
