Rotten eggs, ink thrown at AAP's Tomar as he leaves Bihar university

Former Delhi law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was greeted with rotten eggs, tomatoes and ink by members of different student organisations on his arrival at the TM Bhagalpur University (TMBU) on Friday.

Tomar, who is on police remand on the charge of possessing a fake law degree, was brought to TMBU headquarters by a as part of its ongoing investigation into the case.

As Tomar was escorted inside the administrative building of the university, activists of the AISA, Chhatra Yuva Shakti, Chhatra LJP and other student organisations raised slogan against him and tried to throw eggs at him.

The has claimed he had been a student of the Vishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Studies (VSILS), Munger, an affiliated unit of the TMBU, and possessed a valid law degree from the university.

The university administration had informed the Delhi high court through an affidavit it had never issued any law degree to Tomar.

Sources at the TMBU campus said Tomar was quizzed on issues concerning his admission at VSILS, Munger, his registration in the university as a law student and also about his provisional law degree that the university has already stated was fake.

A Delhi police team that reached Bhagalpur ahead of Tomar on Friday morning held discussions with university officials who had carried out the verification of the provisional law degree of Tomar and pronounced it as fake.

The police team scanned the university records, particularly papers related to the registration of students, during the period when Tomar claims he was enrolled in a law course at VSILS.

The counterfoils of the provisional certificates issued by the university during the period, fee register related to registration of students and fee register for issuing provisional degree, were also scanned by the police team.

Also under police scrutiny was the tabulation register of VSILS of the period when Tomar was said to be a student of the college.

The Delhi Police team also questioned a university employee who used to deal with the registration of VSILS students at the time Tomar was enrolled in the college, as also an employee entrusted with work related to registration of students.

An ACP rank officer of the Delhi police was leading the inquiry.

Before being brought to TMBU, Tomar was taken to his alma mater at Munger. Among the questions he was asked there was how many times he had visited Munger in the past.

According to sources, Tomar informed the probe team that he used to come to Munger only at the time of appearing for law examinations.

Tomar told the police the brother of a lawyer friend of his, who stayed at Munger, had helped him secure admission in VSILS and also used to inform him about the dates of examination.

Tabulation registers and admission registers of the period when Tomar was student of the college were among the documents seized by the probe team. However, the probe team, sources said, failed to locate Tomar's admission form at VSILS.

The investigators asked the college authorities to make available to them the contact details of all the college employees since 1994, including the controller of examination and principal of the college at the time when Tomar was a student.

The college authorities remained consistent in their stand that Tomar had been a student of the college.

The VSILS principal had earlier said Tomar had appeared in LL.B part 1 examination in 1994-95, part-2 in 1995-96 and part-3 in 1997-98 (instead of 1996-97), as per records of the college.

But there was no mention of Tomar's registration number in the tabulation register of law part-3 examination, he had said.

However, the provisional law degree of Tomar, bearing serial no. 3687 and issued on May 18, 2001,was, according to TMBU authorities, had never been issued to Tomar at any point of time.

As per TMBU records, the degree bearing this number was found to have been issued on July 29, 1999 to Sanjay Kumar Choudhury, who had graduated from RS College, Tarapur, in Munger district.
