Teacher’s murder: Govt grants Rs 1 crore to family, orders probe

The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the murder of a government schoolteacher Mukesh Kumar, allegedly by his students. A compensation of Rs 1 crore has also been granted to the teacher’s family.

Deputy chief minister and education minister Manish Sisodia made an announcement in this regard on Tuesday. Kumar was stabbed by two students in a government school in Nangloi on Monday evening. Kumar passed away in a hospital late last night.

The Delhi Police have arrested the class XII student and apprehended his juvenile accomplice, who allegedly stabbed their teacher.

Sisodia said following the complaints by both families that negligence by the administration led to the incident, a magisterial enquiry has been ordered. “When I went to the see Kumar in the hospital last night, his family also complained about negligence by the hospital authority and administration. Hence, I ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter whether there was any lapse on the part of administration and hospital authority,” Sisodia said.

Earlier, Sisodia posted a tweet announcing the compensation on Tuesday. “Loss to the family of teacher Mukesh Kumar can’t be compensated. The government will give Rs 1 crore ex-gratia relief to his family immediately,” his tweet said.

Sisodia also expressed his concern over the incident involving students and said it was now the responsibility of parents and students to restore the confidence of teachers. “At least 26 lakh students are enrolled in Delhi government schools. Just because of two students having criminal tendency, all students should not be considered criminals,” he said adding that at the same, we need to restore confidence among teachers.

“It is high time parents explained to their children that if a teacher says something, it is for their betterment. Parents and students should tell teachers that they respect them. They should do every possible effort to restore their pride,” Sisodia said.
