Lieutenant Subhash Ghidiyal, a resident of Pratap Vihar, Ghaziabad, was riding a motorcycle with his friend as pillion when two unidentified robbers, brandishing a gun, stopped them on their tracks.

One of the robbers pointed a country-made pistol at Subhash, but the officer quickly snatched the gun and pointed it back at them. He then started to beat them up.

“It is a part of my training to disarm people. The robbers were asking us to hand over all the valuables we were carrying. I had no option but to disarm him. I beat them up but they ran away in the dark. Since my friend was also with me, I didn’t chase them for long,” Subhash told Hindustan Times.

Subhash then called the police to report the matter.

“I thought of going to the police station and submit the weapon. But I had just started my bike when a PCR approached us and took us to the police station. I handed over the pistol to the police and lodged a complaint,” he added.

Twenty-four-year-old Subhash is a Lieutenant in 9 Punjab Regiment and is currently posted in Assam. He had come home for his vacation, and was returning from a get-together that night.

The police said they have registered a case against unidentified persons at Sector 24 police station but no one has been arrested so far.

“Subhash has shown remarkable courage and proved that he is well trained. Such people are a great help for the police. He not only averted snatching but also demoralized the snatchers. We appreciate his effort,” Anup Singh, deputy superintendent of police (circle officer 2), said.

“A team has been constituted to look into the matter. We have asked the locals to help us with the investigation. The attackers will be nabbed soon,” Singh added.
