Woman murdered for resisting robbery bid in Delhi’s Amar Colony, servant helped attackers

A 53-year-old woman was found dead inside her home with her hands and legs tied and her house ransacked, in south Delhi’s Amar Colony on Tuesday afternoon.

Sarita Jain was at home with two servants while her husband Manak Lal and son were at work when the incident occurred.

According to the police, three men barged into Sarita’s apartment with the help of one of the servants when she was asleep in her bedroom.

The men reportedly tied the other servant, identified as Ranjan, and ransacked the house.

Sarita woke up to the noise and went out to see what was happening. When she tried to raise an alarm and resist the robbery bid, the men allegedly tied her up, thrashed her and strangled her to death.

The men and the servant who helped them fled with jewellery and cash worth Rs10 lakh. “One of the servants facilitated the entry for the men. He opened the door and let them in. The other servant, Rajan, was then tied up with ropes by the three men and the house was ransacked. Sarita, who was sleeping inside her bedroom, woke up. When she tried to stop the men, she was attacked. The men strangled her when she tried to alert the neighbours,” a senior police officer said.

A case of robbery and murder has been registered against the men, who have been identified. The Delhi Police have, however, made no arrests so far.

The police said that the servant who was hired by Sarita a few weeks ago hatched the plan to carry out a robbery along with two of his associates.

“The entry into the house was facilitated by the servant who had started working in the house around two weeks ago. His servant verification was not done by the family members. We have received some clues about the men and will soon arrest them,” DCP southeast, Romil Baaniya said.

The murder and robbery came to fore after the woman’s son returned home to find her dead and Rajan tied up.
