Food security law: HC seeks action timeline
A bench of chief justice Rajendra Menon and justice AJ Bhambhani directed a senior officer from the Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to appear before it on May 9.
The Delhi high court Friday expressed its dissatisfaction over the manner in which the Delhi government was dealing with a matter related to framing of rules for grievance redressal and accountability under the food security law and sought a timeline of action.
A bench of chief justice Rajendra Menon and justice AJ Bhambhani directed a senior officer from the Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to appear before it on May 9.
The court was hearing a contempt petition by an NGO—Rozi Roti Adhikar Abhiyan— which had claimed that the authorities had failed to comply with the high court’s September 2017 directions regarding implementation of grievance redressal and accountability measures under the National Food Security Act .
On Friday, the Delhi government, in an affidavit, informed the city court it is considering framing rules for grievance redress and accountability under the food security law.
It said file regarding framing of rules for grievance redress had been transferred between various departments and ministries but no action has been taken.
They said the food supply minister, in his note of September 10, 2018, observed that the department was committed to providing ‘doorstep delivery of ration’ for which a cabinet decision had already been taken and that
it would be appropriate that
the rules are framed accordingly.
The matter would be now heard on May 6.
