India vs Australia Highlights, WTC Final Day 4: Kohli-Rahane drag India to 164/3 at stumps, need 280 more on final day

Carey has pocketed the reverse sweep and generally avoided even the conventional sweep against Jadeja today. This time Jadeja overpitches outside off and Carey drives it to the boundary.

Shardul 'The Don' Thakur replaces Shami. He can also be referred to as 'Beefy', and 'Lord' of course. The monicker of 'Don' fits him because he is the only man apart from Don Bradman to have scored a hat-trick of Test half centuries at the Oval. He has magic in his hands and India need some magic at the moment.

Carey with a late cut off Siraj, ball goes between slip and gully and runs to the boundary. That's the second four of the over and Carey will try to up the ante now that Australia are down to their last three wickets.

Green had resorted to kicking the ball away to Jadeja in this over and he ends up falling trying to do that. Pitching outside leg, Green moves his pad into position to make contact with the ball but spins and bounces sharply, goes past the front pad, clips the gloves, hits the back thigh and then bounces to the stumps. Rotten luck one can say but this is what can happen when you go into an ultra defensive mindset.

Oooo Green cops a snorter from Siraj and the fast bowler then gives the Australian some eye time. That reared off just short of a length and smashed into Green's left arm bicep. Green gives Siraj a nice smile back though. Australia are 333 runs ahead and there is a very good chance that this equation will be reversed when India bat. Green will have his eye on Siraj then.

Siraj goes back of a length over the wicket for the last ball of the 58th moving towards Green's leg side. He can't really connect with the flick, the ball takes the thigh pad before running to the boundary behind him.

The lead has bloated to 324 but Australia would want more. Memories of that famous defeat at the Gabba would still be fresh in the heads of most of these players and while India don't have Rishabh Pant to play a madcap match winning innings, anything can happen when they end up having nothing to lose. The fact remains though, Australia are in a very comfortable position and Jadeja has not really caused Carey as many issues as he did for Head yesterday.

Siraj offers some width, overpitched and Carey leans into the cover-drive for four. Australia's lead moves to 320. 

Big cheers from the crowd as Ravindra Jadeja walks in to bowl his first over of the day. Somewhat obvious choice considering Alex Carey is out there. His tendency to get out sweeping to spin is common knowledge in India now.

Shami looks to go full for the last ball of the 52nd, Green gets the front pad out of the way and presents the full face of the bat. Gorgeous straight drive for four.

There is the big early wicket, Umesh Yadav gets the breakthrough. Full and angling into the stumps with a late away movement, Labuschagne with a tentative prod and he edges it to Pujara at first slip. That darted at Pujara and he did well to hold on.

Just the one run for Green off the second ball. Labuschagne was hit on the midriff by the fourth delivery, just an addition to the plethora of bruises he had taken from the last session of Day 3.

Cameron Green is on strike and he is facing Umesh Yadav. Green is on 7 off 27, Labuschagne on 41 off 118.

Australia's current lead with six wickets in hand is 296. The highest successful run chase at the Oval in Test cricket? 263 all the way back in 1902. 

"I was just resting my eyes between balls and just relaxing," Labuschagne quoted by ICC. "I was trying to calm my nerves a little bit, you can't watch the game all the time, I got up there and was awake pretty soon. I didn't have too many rests there when Siraj banged that first one in."

Marnus Labuschagne was having a nice little nap on the balcony of the Australian dressing room with his pads on when he was given a rude wakeup call on Day 3. That was because of the fact that David Warner was dismissed and he was up. The video of him waking up from the little snooze and walking out to bat will certainly go down in the folklore of the WTC final in the future, it already has in the case of this match. 

Australia are so far ahead with their lead that it might be difficult to believe that momentum swung back and forth between both sides between Day 3 but that was the case. It started off with a banger for Australia as they got a wicket off the second ball of the day but that session ended with captain Pat Cummins kicking the ball in frustration as they could not add to that tally after that. Moreover for him, he had got Shardul Thakur out off a no ball, as he did against Ajinkya Rahane while he was on 17 on Day 2 while his team dropped a whopping three catches . Rahane was the first man to fall in the second session just 11 runs away from his century while Thakur incredibly became just the second man after Don Bradman himself to have scored a hat-trick of Test half centuries at the Oval. Then came a 11-over burst from India before Tea in which Australia lost David Warner. They got another wicket just after resumption and after that, it looked like Steve Smith had flattened the bowling attack. Then the momentum shifted again when Smith fell out of nowhere while attempting a wild big shot and Travis Head's troubled stay against Ravindra Jadeja ended soon thereafter. It meant that, despite being 296 runs behind, India looked quite upbeat at the end of the day.

We were looking to get 320-330 but overall we had a good day. Bowling wise we bowled well. Everyone chipped in. That was a really good catch. We all know he's a really good fielder. Has a big reach. Australia slightly ahead in the game. For us it's important to be in the moment, play session by session. First one hour will be crucial tomorrow. We know funny things can happen. Jadeja bowled really well, footmarks helped him against the left-hander. Still feel wicket will help seam bowlers.

With his wickets of Steve Smith and Travis Head, Jadeja, with 267 wickets, went past Bishan Singh Bedi (266) to be the leading wicket-taker among Indian among left-arm spinners. Overall, he stands fourth after Ragana Herath (433), Daniel Vettori (362) and Derek Underwood (297).

Target of 263 is the highest successfully chased target at The Oval. It was pulled off by England in 1902 against Australia. Since 2010, only once has a target of more than 140 been successfully chased. For India, their highest at the venue has been 173, which was back in 1971 against England.

Well, there is bad news for cricket fans. According to Accuweather, there is chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Otherwise, weather is likely to be cloudy and mild.

Shardul Thakur in press conference at end of Day 3: "Well, cricket is a funny game. You can never say what is the right total and this one-off game, especially ICC finals, you never know, I mean, who can handle the pressure better out there - one good partnership and you can even chase down 450 or maybe more than that - so last year that England have chased 400 here and they did not lose too many wickets. So that's a positive sign for us. Whatever they put up on the board, it's too early to make any predictions. We see a lot of times in Test cricket that the game changes within an hour. So yes, we like to be optimistic tomorrow going on the field. And yeah, we'll take it on from there."

Australia started off well by dismissing KS Bharat in the first over of the day before Rahane and Shardul put on a century stand. The former would have been dismissed earlier had Pat Cummins not bowled a no ball, again. The partnership helped India avoid follow-on. India were eventually dismissed for 296 with Australia gaining a 173-run lead.

Siraj struck early to dismiss Warner in the fourth over before Khawaja was dismissed by Umesh Yadav. Steve Smith then looked to up the scoring rate as a quick fifty-run stand came up before Jadeja got the better of him and Travis Head shortly after. Labuschagne and Green then ensured that Australia lose no more wickets as Day 3 closed to the team having a 296-run lead.
