Pollution from Haryana in focus at Yamuna meet

Apr 28, 2023 11:56 PM IST

Saxena, in the meeting held on Thursday, said any action taken by Delhi will prove to be insufficient in controlling pollution in the river unless sources in Haryana were tackled too

Lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena held a meeting with officials from both Delhi and Haryana to find a solution to the pollution coming into the Yamuna from Haryana, identifying eight key drains which needed priority action from the Haryana Government, officials aware of the matter said on Friday.

The LG, who is also the head of the NGT-appointed high-level committee (HLC) on Yamuna rejuvenation, asked for the Haryana government to complete trapping sewage and effluents in these drains in a time-bound manner.

Saxena, in the meeting held on Thursday, said any action taken by Delhi will prove to be insufficient in controlling pollution in the river unless sources in Haryana were tackled too. It was also discussed in the meeting the Najafgarh drain accounts for 70% of the pollution in the river and 40% of this discharge comes from Haryana, an official from the LG secretariat said.

“This 40% discharge (mostly untreated) comes from the L1, L2, and L3 drains flowing out of Gurugram in Haryana. Similarly, the Mungeshpur and Bhupania drains in Haryana and carry huge amounts of industrial effluent, also merge into the Najafgarh drain at Kakrola regulator. The DD6 drain from Kundli Industrial Area merges into a supplementary drain,” said an LG House official.

Apart from these, the DD2 and DD8 drains from Panipat and Kundli were the other key drains identified both of which directly flow into the Yamuna right before the river enters Delhi.

The meeting comprised chief secretaries of both Haryana and Delhi, commissioner of Haryana urban local bodies, municipal commissioners of Gurugram and Faridabad, engineers-in-chief of Haryana irrigation and public health engineering departments, along with Delhi officials like principal secretaries of irrigation and flood control and environment departments, Delhi Jal Board CEO and MCD commissioner, among others.

The meeting comes after several rounds of communication between the LG and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the latest one being held on April 26. Khattar had also written to the LG about the Haryana government’s action plan for Yamuna pollution.

During the meeting on Thursday, Haryana government officials also informed the LG that efforts were already underway to tackle the problem of these drains which will be augmented, enhanced and completed within a timeframe corresponding with the timelines of Delhi.

“It was also decided that henceforth officials concerned from Haryana will also attend the meetings of the HCL on Yamuna chaired by the LG and will carry out the directions passed in such meetings,” an LG house official added.

PC Meena, chief executive officer, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority said they held a detailed discussion on the matter. “We will work with our counterparts in Delhi to reduce pollution in Yamuna and all steps will be taken in a time bound manner to resolve critical issues,” he said.
