Taapsee Pannu says she’d looked quite good as Udham Singh, compliments Vicky Kaushal on first look

Taapsee Pannu’s reaction to Vicky Kaushal’s first look as Udham Singh in Shoojit Sircar’s film was quite different from the rest. Reacting to the look, she wrote on Twitter that she could look “quite good playing Udham Singh” but now that Vicky was doing the role, she thought he would do a decent job.

She wrote: “I kept telling @ShoojitSircar and @ronnielahiri I can be quite good at playing Udham Singh! But now that they have found @vickykaushal09 I think he will do a decent job. For all the favourites in one team I’m gonna wait for this.” Her comment got a cheeky response from her Pink producer Ronnie Lahiri, who is also producing this one. He wrote back: “He’s trying to match up to your standards.” Not one to hold back, Taapsee replied: “Tell him to keep trying ! He will reach somewhere close by.”

In the picture, Vicky sports a completely different look, with well-oiled hair. The look on his face is rather stern, with a scar under his right eye attracting a lot of attention. He wears western-styled suit, with an overcoat and holds a bowler hat in his hand. The shot has been taken at St Petersburg in Russia.

Sardar Udham Singh is being directed by Shoojit Sircar and has been written by Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhattacharya. However, Vicky was not Shoojit’s first choice; Irrfan was to play the role but his cancer diagnosis altered Shoojit’s plans. Speaking about his choice of Vicky, Shoojit told Mumbai Mirror: “There’s a burning intensity and anger that I saw in his eyes during our first meeting itself, that convinced me he was the one right man to play Udham. The film is based on Udham Singh’s life, particularly one event which we had already researched. Since Vicky is from Punjab, a Sikh family, it’s a huge responsibility for him too.”

Taapsee will star in Saand Ki Aankh next along with Bhoomi Pednekar. The film wrapped up its shoot on Wednesday and both the actors shared the news on Instagram. She wrote: “I firmly believe it was the magical energies of so many and more that made this nearly impossible goal hit the ‘bulls-eye’. 50 days of holding hands and walking through, they truly helped the ‘Saand’ to navigate in the right direction. Cheers to these rockstars of #SaandKiAankh. We are coming to celebrate DIWALI with you all.” Saand Ki Aankh will be a Diwali release.
