Can’t force couples to have only two children: Centre to Supreme Court

In its affidavit in the top court, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) maintained that the Family Welfare Programme in India gives couples the right to decide the size of their family without any compulsion.

Cannot cure all ills of system, says top court

A bench headed by justice Sanjay K Kaul added that it was not possible for the judiciary to take over all the roles and entertain petitions with “Utopian” prayers.

On Tuesday, only after justice Rohinton F Nariman inquired about the health of fellow judge, justice Krishna Murari, those attending the proceedings came to know that the latter had been detected with the viral disease and that it was his first day in court after recovering.

The judges, who were hearing a petition by journalist Amish Devgan to quash FIRs over his controversial comments on Sufi seer Moinuddin Chishti, also underlined that “political speech relating to government policies requires greater protection for preservation and promotion of democracy” as freedom to express and speak is the most important condition for political democracy.

Sarpanch from Maharashtra to undergo DNA test

According to the Maharashtra Village Panchayats Act, a person is disqualified from holding any position in the gram panchayat if he or she has more then two children. Such a person cannot contest any post too.

People not wearing masks in public spaces are violating the fundamental right to life of everyone else, the Supreme Court said on Thursday as it implored all states to enforce the guidelines on wearing masks and social distancing scrupulously in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the last seven months, Justice Kaul has issued almost 100 orders, reproaching what he has frequently called the ‘can’t care less’ attitude of legal departments of various states.
