HC fines Mohali resident Rs 1 lakh for frivolous plea

The Punjab and Haryana high court has fined an SAS Nagar resident Rs 1 lakh for filing a frivolous petition in 2011 against Punjab director general of police (prison reforms), Sanjiv Gupta. The petition alleged Gupta had acquired assets disproportionate to known sources of income and demanded a CBI inquiry. Gupta, then was additional DGP (crime).

‘Sikh-Christian wedding by Hindu rites no basis for denying alimony’

The Punjab and Haryana high court has held that a Sikh-Christian marriage performed by the Hindu rites with the consent of both parties cannot be invalid for claiming maintenance under Section 125 of the CrPC.

Punjab to appoint 1,400 PTIs against 849 advertised posts: HC

The Punjab and Haryana high court has settled the controversy over the appointment of physical training instructors (PTIs) in schools by the Punjab government. Against the 849 posts advertised in 2006, the state government has now been told to appoint around 1,400 PTIs.

The government had in 2008 appointed 849 teachers with essential qualification being a certificate course in physical education (CPEd). The selection criterion, however, was challenged in 2008 by those having higher qualification(Representative image)

Punjab TET: HC awards one mark for wrong question; new merit list by June 1

The Punjab and Haryana high court has awarded one mark to all candidates for a wrong question and asked the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) to accordingly revise the merit list of the Punjab State Teachers Eligibility Test (PSTET)-2, conducted for the masters’ cadre in December 2015.

Backlog burden: HC plans special hearings during summer vacation

With mounting pendency and no indications of appointment of more judges anytime soon, the Punjab and Haryana high court has decided to hold special hearings during the summer vacation next month to clear the backlog.

The Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered immediate transfer of district magistrate (DM), superintendent of police (SP) and deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Kurukshetra, in connection with the mysterious death of a Sarahanpur Muslim youth, allegedly killed by Gau Raksha Dal, a right-wing vigilante group.

Jat stir: ‘SP, DC sent families to safer places, ignored judicial officers’

In a fresh embarrassment to the Haryana government in the February Jat quota violence, Sonepat district and sessions judge DS Sheoran, in his report submitted to the Punjab and Haryana high court, has said that during the violence period, the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police had shifted their families to “safer places”, whereas judicial officers were left at the “mercy of god” without providing any security.

Still awaited: Verdict on legality of CPS appointments in Punjab

The Calcutta high court in June 2015 had invalidated appointments of chief parliamentary secretaries (CPSES) made by the Mamata Banerjee government.

With the deadlock between the Centre and the Supreme Court over the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) on for over a year now, the Punjab and Haryana high court is one of the worst affected in terms of vacancies of judges.

HC makes bail tougher for hardened criminals

Those convicted of an offence cannot count their under-trial detention period in a separate case for seeking bail. There can be no concurrence (simultaneous occurrence of events) of under-trial detention in one case with post-conviction sentence in another for the purpose of bail, the Punjab and Haryana high court has ruled while hearing a bunch of bail matters.
