Lakhs take holy dip in Ganga, Saryu

Violence mars civic poll

LARGE-SCALE violence marred the second phase of local bodies election held in 11 nagar nigams and 24 nagar palika parishads, on Tuesday. Though there were no immediate reports of any casualty, a large number of people were injured in the violence. Incidents of group clash, booth capturing, bogus voting, firing and arson were reported in Agra, Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and Lucknow. State Election Commission (SEC) said around 60 per cent votes were polled in the second phase.

Ten dengue cases in Varanasi, Agra

TEN CASES of dengue were detected in Varanasi and Agra. The Varanasi district health administration was on its toes after five patients, including a foreign national, were found to be suffering from the disease over the past week. These five patients were admitted to Heritage Hospital in Lanka area. Heritage Hospital medical superintendent Dr PSR Aiyyar and Dr SK Singh confirmed that the five persons were infected with the dengue virus. However, they refused to disclose the names of patients.

A 95-YEAR-OLD woman on Wednesday committed sati at village Panihari of Chhatarpur district. Sources said 100-year-old Siyaram Rajput died after a prolonged illness at the village in Gourihar tehsil and his wife Karuya Devi jumped onto his funeral pyre.

To curb a burp, Kerala kills cola

A WEEK after a Delhi-based NGO announced that soft drinks manufactured by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo contained harmful levels of pesticides, the cola war is going strong. Taking into account the report of the Centre for Science and Environment, the Kerala government on Wednesday announced a ban on the production and sale of soft drinks manufactured by the two companies. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who has been fighting against the colas even in his pre-CM days, said the bottling plants in the state would be immediately closed down.
