Rana likely to challenge his detention

Tahawwur Rana, the Pakistani-Canadian who has been charged in a Chicago court for terror along with David Coleman Headley, is expected to contest his detention before a Federal judge on Wednesday.

He is unlikely to secure bail since an earlier bail plea was rejected by the court on December 15.

In effect, the hearing is to set a briefing schedule for filing of requisite documents.

Randall Samborn, spokesman for the US Attorney’s office, said on Wednesday morning, “We are not expecting any decision today.” He said legal arguments will be presented in writing at this hearing.

He also said that the third person who has been charged, former Pakistan Army Major Abdur Rehman Hashim Syed was “believed” to still be in Pakistan. More importantly, the prosecutors have a week to formally indict Rana.
