FSU shooting suspect is in custody. Although the shooter has not been identified, misinformation quickly spread online, falsely naming Sam Hyde as the suspect.

A shooting at Florida State University's campus in Tallahassee has left at least four people injured. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody. Although the shooter has not been identified, misinformation quickly spread online, falsely naming comedian Sam Hyde as the suspect. Hyde is frequently and falsely linked to mass shootings as part of a long-running internet hoax. Hyde, who has no connection to FSU incident, was similarly and baselessly linked to the Madison school shooting last year as well as the 2023 Nashville school shooting.

Who is Sam Hyde?

Sam Hyde is a comedian known for his politically charged, often far-right-leaning humor. He first gained attention in 2014 when a parody TED Talk he performed as part of the sketch comedy group Million Dollar Extreme went viral. In 2015, the group was given a sketch show on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which ran for one season before being canceled.

That same year, Hyde became the subject of an internet hoax in which he was falsely named as the gunman in the San Bernardino shooting that left 14 people dead. Since then, he has been baselessly linked to numerous mass shootings, including the Orlando nightclub shooting, the Parkland school shooting, the Santa Fe High School shooting, and the Uvalde school shooting.
