‘Never have I felt so…’: Indian behind camera shares encounter with Texas woman
The group of Indian-American women were out on a dinner when a Mexican woman suddenly approached them and started using racial slurs against them. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
A video of a woman in Dallas, Texas assaulting a group of Indian-Americans went viral on social media platforms on Friday and enraged the Indian community abroad against racial discrimination. The attacker can be heard using racial slurs and curse words and threatening to “shoot” them if they did not stop recording.
Sharing the video on her Facebook account, one of the women in the group, Indrani Banerjee, narrated the appalling encounter following a casual dinner with her friends, saying she had lived in Dallas for 29 years and had never felt so humiliated before.
“Dinner with friends ended with a frightening experience. As we left Sixty Vines, Plano and headed towards our cars, an angry, drunk woman came at us with hateful racial slurs and even physically attacked us...I have lived in DFW for 29 years and never have I felt so humiliated, threatened, and scared for my life. Can’t believe this is what America has become,” she wrote, adding that they called 911 and the cops arrived within minutes.
Another woman named Bidisha Rudra, who was also a part of the group, shared a post explaining what provoked the woman to attack them.
“A lot of people are asking what triggered this behavior. Answer is ‘nothing’. We were talking amongst ourselves when she walked by and made a racially insinuating comment. And kept coming back to add additional insults as captured in the video. This unprovoked attack terrifies us even more,” she wrote on Facebook.
Texas woman attacks group of Indian-Americans
The incident took place on Wednesday night in a parking lot in Dallas, Texas.
“I hate you f****** Indians, that's why. Oh these f****** Indians! They come to America because they want a better life. They obviously are not leading a great life in India,” the attacker, who claimed to be Mexican, can be heard saying in the viral video.
“I am a Mexican-American. I was born here. Were you born here?” the attacker said. “Everywhere I f****** go, you Indians are f****** everywhere.”
She then started attacking the person behind the camera and threatened to shoot them, with a hand in her bag in what appeared like reaching for a weapon, if they did not stop recording the video.
The woman, identified as Esmeralda Upton of Plano, has been arrested on a charge of "assault causing bodily injury and a charge of terroristic threats", a report said, adding that she is being held on $10,000 bond.
The police are currently investigating the matter.
