Panic gripped Amritsar in the early hours of May 8 as loud explosions swept the city, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay indoors with lights off. Earlier in the day a large-scale civil defence mock drill ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs were conducted in the city, designed to test emergency preparedness amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions following Operation Sindoor. Earlier in the day, India’s armed forces had launched precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, triggering heavy Pakistani artillery fire along the Line of Control.
