Josh Radnor doesn’t think How I Met Your Mother finale was that bad

Remember that day, two years ago on March 31, 2014, when we sat in front of our TVs, tears in our eyes, watching the last episode of How I Met Your Mother. That day, many of us gave up on the small screen for good.

We waited for eight long years to finally see Josh Radnor, who played Ted Mosby, united with the mother of his kids. Instead they killed off the girl to cancer. Robin and Barney, who got married after so much trouble, got divorced just three years into the marriage. Also, it turns out that Ted was always in love with Robin and was telling his kids this story just so they would approve of his love for her. Just revisiting the finale still makes our blood boil at how a perfect story was ruined so epically.

But here’s something more shocking. Josh Radnor, who played Ted Mosby for eight years, said in a recent interview that much of the reactions were a little exaggerated.

“A lot of (the reaction) was great. I think the narrative the media got hold of was that everyone was outraged. I don’t think that was true,” he in an interview to Huffington Post.

Everyone beat their chests and left no stone unturned to let the world know how cheated they felt. The viewers waited eight super excruciatingly long years to see Ted finally be united with the mother of his kids but their loyalty was rewarded with disappointment.

Radnor added that he often takes polls at colleges where he visits and asks people to tell him by a show of hands who liked or didn’t like the finale. “Sometimes it’s 50/50,” he said. “It seems to be about 60/40 -- 60 (percent) disappointed, 40 (percent who liked it). So I think it’s been overstated, people’s disappointment with it.”

He said that the pressure to give the show the perfect ending was also too much. “If Ted and Tracy walked off into the sunset together, I think people would have called it a soft or sentimental ending, or that it was a fairy tale. But something about How I Met Your Mother was it always upended your expectations, it always made you cry, it always was not what you thought it was. So I think it was in keeping with the DNA for the show. And my suspicion is that it will age pretty well, so let’s talk in 10 years and see what people think.”

Radnor is currently working on his latest project Mercy Street- a PBS series which is set at a hospital during the Civil War.
