Karnataka High Court urges implementation of Uniform Civil Code

The High Court of Karnataka has appealed to Parliament and state legislatures to move forward with the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

State-wise common civil codes contradict the idea of UCC

Such a scenario can be intrinsically divisive, as a nation with different civil laws in different states was never intended by the framers of the Constitution

Some personal laws in India indeed violate the principles of gender justice and equality. It is an area where the SC must step in, as cases challenging such personal laws are pending before the apex court. Very often, violations of fundamental rights are adequately redressed by adjudication rather than legislation (AP)

The court pointed out that the police was a state machinery and not authorised to harass individuals.

The high court tagged all the pleas challenging the provisions of UCC and would the matter on April 1.(PTI)
