ISS is hailed as an epitome of cooperation between the Russia and the US post cold war. This decision of Kremlin leaving the ISS sets the new low in the relation of it with Washington.

Russia will withdraw from International Space Station (ISS) in 2024, the newly appointed head of the Russian space agency said. “Of course, we will fulfil all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made,” Roscosmos chief Yury Borisov briefed Putin in comments released by the Kremlin, reports AFP.

After months of suspense, it is now confirmed that ISS will not have a Russian cosmonaut from 2024. ISS is hailed as an epitome of cooperation between the Russia and the US post cold war. Russia and the United States have shown a significant collaboration at ISS science exploration missions. This decision of Kremlin leaving the ISS sets the new low in its relation with Washington.

3 reasons Why Russia is withdrawing from ISS

1) Kremlin's move is being seen as an extreme retaliation against the US sanctions in the aftermath of the Ukraine invasion. The then head of Roscosmos refuted the Western economic sanctions and warned to cease partnerships with NASA and the European Space Agency.

2) Russia plans to launch its own orbital station. Russia is ready to build its own space station to launch it into orbit by 2030 if President Vladimir Putin gives the go-ahead, said Dmitry Rogozin, the then head of its Roscosmos space agency, in April, 2021.

3) The long settled cold war-era space race is gearing up again. Roscosmos is preparing to lead its own space explorations and work with other countries on its efforts. Russia and China announced they would team up in a separate partnership to establish a human presence on the lunar surface, something akin to the US Artemis programme.
