Apr 15, 2025 02:23 PM IST

ChatGPT becomes part of the discussion in social media as an old article about a child's diagnosis surfaces online.

In what many are calling a peak AI vs human expertise moment, a real-life story from 2023 has resurfaced—raising renewed questions about the role of AI in healthcare. Many AI enthusiasts are sharing this article on social media to debate the need for AI in healthcare.

Back in 2023, as per a report by TODAY.com, when 17 doctors couldn’t provide answers, one desperate mother turned to ChatGPT—and got a diagnosis that changed everything.

For over three years, Courtney tirelessly sought help for her 4-year-old son, Alex, whose mysterious symptoms baffled paediatricians and specialists alike. It began during the pandemic with a persistent toothache, followed by odd behaviours like chewing on objects for relief. Soon, Alex's growth slowed, and he began developing imbalances in his feet. Despite numerous tests and consultations, there were no clear answers—until Courtney decided to try something unconventional.

Using ChatGPT, she uploaded Alex’s MRI notes and listed every symptom he had experienced. Within seconds, the AI suggested a rare neurological condition: Tethered Cord Syndrome—a disorder where spinal cord tissue is abnormally attached, limiting movement and causing pain. Further research and support from an online community led her to a neurosurgeon, who confirmed the diagnosis. Alex soon underwent successful surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

Can You Trust ChatGPT with Medical Diagnoses?

The story, originally reported by TODAY.com, went viral for good reason. It highlights the growing reliance on AI tools—even for life-altering decisions. But while this case had a happy ending, experts urge caution. AI systems like ChatGPT are not medical professionals. They don’t have context, clinical judgement, or access to full patient histories.

Major AI developers, including OpenAI and Google, continue to grapple with issues like misinformation and "AI hallucinations"—where models generate plausible-sounding but incorrect information. That said, the potential is undeniable. With careful integration, AI could become a powerful support tool in healthcare, offering early insights, flagging rare conditions, and enhancing patient outcomes—alongside human doctors, not in place of them.
