Orcas, also known as "killer whales", have been damaging sailing boats along the Spanish and Portuguese coasts. The Atlantic Orca Working Group has documented at least 20 interactions between small vessels and the highly social apex predators this month alone in the Strait of Gibraltar. The unusual behaviour observed in orcas could be attributed to playfulness, a "fad" behaviour or a traumatic event experienced by a specific orca that triggered a behavioural change influencing the rest of the population to imitate this behaviour, according to experts.
