2.0 vs Padman: Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar-starrer delayed? Here’s how this is possible

After Akshay Kumar announced that Padman will release on Republic Day, speculations are rife that his film with Rajinikanth, 2.0, might be delayed.

After Akshay Kumar tweeted out a new poster of Padman on Sunday, and announced the release date of the film - January 26, 2018 - there has been speculation in the media that Rajinikanth starrer 2.0, which previously occupied the slot, could be delayed. Trade analysts also seem to be of the same opinion. Both Taran Adarsh and Sreedhar Pillai tweeted that there are chances of the film being delayed to the summer.

Sreedhar Pillai, while speaking to Hindustan Times said that there are multiple reasons why the speculations surfaced. He explained, “This morning, Akshay Kumar announced that his film Padman will be releasing on January 26, 2018. This is seen as a sign that there are high chances of Shankar’s directorial, 2.0 not releasing during Republic Day weekend. If it was releasing, would Akshay Kumar want to clash at the box office with such a huge film of his own?”

He also said that there are talks that the visual effects for the film are yet to be completed. This could be another reason for the movie’s delayed release. It also looks like the trade wants 2.0 to be a summer release. “A summer release is a good thing for a film like 2.0. It is during the vacations, and the best (time for the) audience come out to watch movies. In fact, Baahubali 2 received a great response as a summer release and trade expects the same for this film too,” he said.

There has been no official confirmation so far from the filmmakers about the delay in 2.0’s release date. It must also be noted that there were talks of another Rajinikanth movie, Kaala Karikaalan, directed by Pa Ranjith, to be slated for an April release. It remains to be seen if producer Dhanush will change the release date for this film in light of the 2.0 move.

Meanwhile, Amy Jackson shot the last 2.0 song in October, before heading out to Toronto to film a guest spot on the show, Supergirl. The cast and crew of 2.0 were all present at a grand audio launch event in Dubai on October 27. The two songs that were released so far have been received well.
