A 22-year-old man was beaten to death by a group of molesters who had passed lewd comments on his sister when she was returning home after coaching class. The same group was allegedly also involved in a similar incident during the recent board examinations.

The deceased was assaulted by the attackers with sticks, and his brother also sustained injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The fight broke out at a remote village under Haidernagar police station of Palamu district on Tuesday.

That morning, the sister of the deceased was in a group of girls going to the coaching class, and they were targeted by the lecherous group. When they were coming back, the sister was again targeted by the same group, and she informed her family members of what was happening.

The girl’s surviving brother said, “When I along with my brother went there to inquire, they attacked us with sticks. We ran for our lives and somehow managed to escape.” Their family members took them to the hospital; one of the brothers, who was grievously injured, died at the hospital.

Taking cognisance of the offence, police teams from Haidernagar rushed to the spot and the hospital. They managed to nab one of the accused within hours of the attack. Palamu superintendent of police Indrajit Mahatha said, “One of those involved in the attack has been arrested; raids are on to arrest the others. The fight between two sides broke out over eve-teasing, resulting in the loss of life.”

The SP also appealed to the local people to report any development to the police and refrain from taking action on their own, adding that the incident of eve-teasing was not reported to the police. Tight security arrangements have been made in the village, and civil and police officials held meetings with the villager elders.
