Uber: “As the route taken was much different than the GPS (global positioning system) suggested one, the upfront price of your trip was changed.”

JUSTIFYING EXTRA CHARGES, THE UBER WAY

Much has been written about app-based cabs like Uber and Ola becoming a comfortable mode of transport. So much so that people are beginning to prefer them and even considering whether they should stop buying personal cars. Of course, these cabs come with advantages. But not everything is so hunky-dory. Take this case, for instance. The fare showed Rs 49 at the time of booking for seven kilometers. However, the actual fare turned out to be Rs 99 because the travel had exceeded by 0.1 km. And this is how Uber justified it: “As the route taken was much different than the GPS (global positioning system) suggested one, the upfront price of your trip was changed.”

COPS TURN TRAINERS FOR A CAUSE

With the summer vacations approaching, parents are scouting around for the right workshops for their kids. In an appreciable move, the Chandigarh Police are coming up with a self-defence workshop for girls. They will be conducting the 15-day workshop at two places daily. A small suggestion: why not extend this to rest of the year also? After all, if girls are able to defend themselves, it also helps the police who will have fewer cases, especially those involving crimes against women, to handle.

UNUSUAL SPIKE IN SODA SALES

Tricity hoteliers are still smarting from the Supreme Court’s ban on serving of liquor within 500 metres of the state and national highways. A hotelier shared an interesting anecdote. He said the excise department sleuths, who have been rather active after the ban, smelt something fishy at a hotel whose sale of soda had increased dramatically. “They could sense that either people are bringing their own liquor or the hotel is serving it to them on the sly and not reflecting it in the bills,” he said, adding “Now, hotel owners are careful that soda sales don’t show an unusual increase.”

COCKTAILS OR MOCKTAILS?

Overheard someone saying: “What the ban has done is that people now don’t need to guess whether there will be cocktails or mocktails at the function. If the event is at any place around the Madhya Marg or in Sectors 35 or 43, it is clear that don’t expect cocktails.“
