With summer vacations having started, lot of relatives and friends have come calling. But the residents have a problem. There’s just no place where they can take their relatives to. Chandigarh has never attracted tourists, except those who want to study architecture. But still the residents have been very proud of their limited attractions—Sukhna Lake and the Rock Garden. But this time with no water in lake, they rue that their options have further dried up.
EIGHT YEARS OF WALMART
Walmart’s ‘Best Price’ has just completed eight years of its existence in Zirakpur. The announcement that the US’s multinational would be setting up a hypermarket here had generated a huge hype then. Its launch made big news and analysts wondered if it would eat away smaller traders and wholesalers. People rushed just to have a glimpse of the supermarket, some even using clout to seek membership card. Eight years on, it’s just one of the many discount department stores that have opened shop in the region.
AGAINST NOMINATED COUNCILLORS
A few days ago HT did a story pointing to irregularities in nomination of certain municipal councillors, with some even getting picked despite applying after the so-called last date. There was an interesting aspect in the process, with some “negative recommendations” put forth. For instance Chandigarh Beopar Mandal through its former patron, general secretary and vice-president applied to oppose candidature of mandal chairman, Charanjiv Singh. Obviously it didn’t have the desired effect.
BOOK ON ACADEMIC FRAUD
A colleague, Munieshwer A Sagar has recently co-authored a book titled, ‘Brainwashed Republic -- India’s Controlled Systemic Deracination.’ The book has foreword by Rajya Sabha MP, Subramanian Swami, who writes: “The book presents in a step by step way historical facts juxtaposed with the lies in the current history text books.” The authors say that by bringing these facts in the public domain they hope to eradicate these distortions from Indian history.
