Unpicked garbage gets Aggar Nagar residents in a flap

Heaps of garbage welcomes you to Aggar Nagar as they have not been lifted from the past one month. It can be seen strewn near the underpass of Aggar Nagar on the Ferozepur Road, leaving residents as well as commuters harried.

With the rainy season ahead, the foul smell emanating from the garbage would increase manifold and also pose threat to various diseases. The residents claimed that no dustbin had been placed on the site, and the garbage was strewn in a wrong manner.

While the officials usually claim to ensure proper lifting of garbage, but their claims do not meet reality here. “It is difficult to cross the underpass as garbage is lying dumped, making living conditions unhygienic. We cover our faces while passing through this dumping place. The municipal corporation and A2Z company (which lifts garbage) should immediately make efforts to remove garbage from this dumping area,” a resident of the area said.

“Earlier, a dump was situated near Punjab Agricultural University, but sweepers now throw garbage in the open here. During rainy days, the condition becomes worst. Stray animals can also be seen wandering around the heaps of garbage,” said BK Goyal, another resident.

Besides, the water is also getting logged near this site, increasing the problems of residents. “We have appealed several times to various MC officials to remove garbage from here and shift the dumping site to some other place,” said Krishan Kumar, manager of Ludhiana Aggarwal Co-operative House Building Society Limited, Aggar Nagar.

He said, “Whenever we inform officials of the A2Z company the garbage is lifted, but sometimes they too miss to lift it. The MC should shift this dumping site to another place.”

Chief, health and sanitation wing, AS Sekhon said, “We will take required action and ensure lifting of garbage. We will also look into demand of shifting the dumping site.”

Vice-president, A2Z group, BPS Chauhan was not available for comment.
