Student organisations gearing up to guide newcomers at PU

Though the new academic session at Panjab University will start after three months, students organisations can be seen gearing up to help newcomers regarding admissions. A majority of student organisations have started putting up the posters of their leaders, along with contact numbers, at different places on the campus.

The student leaders claim these posters have been pasted to facilitate students visiting the university to take admission in different courses.

Swaraj Singh Sidhu, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader, whose photograph is among those displayed at the Student Centre, said, “Although this is basically party promotion, it will immensely help those visiting the university to take admission in their desired courses.”

He added, “Students come from far-flung areas and they need help in locating departments. We will soon launch department-wise helplines to facilitate newcomers; we will also release a combined pamphlet. The preparations are on and we are actively promoting the party through social media platforms to make the applicants aware about the university and its courses.”

Similarly, another student Maninder Singh Dhol, a Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) representative, whose is also among those in the party posters, said, “No new posters have been put up as we are ye to take a final call on our front runners. The party posters have been pasted facilitate new comers.”

He added they had even received a couple of calls from students who needed information about the admission procedure at the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS). “Those who have been helped by us will further spread the word, which will automatically help the party in the longer run,” added Maninder.

Meanwhile, the Indian national students’ organisation (INSO) has put up the posters outside almost all the departments with a tag line ‘You will never walk alone’, along with two WhatsApp contact numbers.

Sanjay Sangwan, INSO president, claimed, “I was elected as party president last month after which the posters were put up to make the campus students aware the person who represents the INSO and will be contesting the student body elections on the party’s behalf this year.”

Asked why the posters were being put up so early, he replied the idea is to help those who need any kind of assistance.

Commenting on it, dean students welfare (DSW) Prof Navdeep Goyal said, “The places to put up posters have not been allocated as of now. Till there’s no violence at the campus, the student organisations are free to advertise about their candidates anywhere they wish. However, we have provided boards to put up the posters.”
