So much so that residents of some areas rope in political leaders to get a particular divider removed.
Spots where dividers have been broken have witnessed a number of accidents, but the municipal corporation turn a blind eye to the issue.
A damaged divider near Shastri Nagar railway crossing is an open invitation to mishaps. The spot is mainly used by the two-wheeler riders to save their time and fuel. According to the nearby shopkeepers, minor accidents at the spot were a routine.
“Such dividers should be repaired and their level be raised above that of the road so that even if commuters try they can’t cross it. Several accidents have taken place while crossing this divider near the railway crossing,” said Manmohanjit Singh, a trader.
Some commuters also use the broken divider near the Flames Mall on Malhar Road to get to the other side of the road. Besides, broken dividers can also be seen on the Mall Road near Bharat Nagar Chowk and other parts of the city.
“Municipal Corporation should conduct survey about the broken dividers and they should be raised in such manner so that nobody could cross them just by removing a couple of bricks,” said Inderjit Singh, a resident.
DIVIDER LEVELLED
In a fresh example, part of a divider was removed near Industrial Training Institute on the Gill Road. Despite being one of the busiest roads, there is no provision of traffic lights at this point. This area was especially closed for traffic to avoid mishaps. An RTI activist claimed that this part of divider was removed under political pressure.
“I don’t know the reason of removing this part of divider as nobody has consulted me. But I am in favour of traffic lights at the spot,” said Jagbir Singh Sokhi, councillor of ward number 63.
Additional commissioner, Sumeet Jarangal, said, “Nobody can remove a divider without permission. I will look into the matter. We will also examine the broken dividers.”
