There are two schools in Ludhiana, which were started before independence. Ewing Christian Senior Secondary School on Brown road, Ludhiana, is 176-year-old, while Arya Senior Secondary School, at old Sabzi Mandi, was established in 1903. SCD Government College is the oldest college in Ludhiana and is 93-year-old.
Ewing Christian Senior Secondary School
Ewing Christian Senior Secondary School was established in 1834. A bell from New York, made by Alfred Ivers and company, was installed at the school in 1841. The name of the company, year and place is still printed on the bell.
The bell rings every morning for five minutes before the school starts. Its sound used to reach Aarti Chowk, which is 5-km away, but now due to increase in noise pollution the sound reaches only till Clock tower.
The trees on the campus are decades old. It is a co-educational English medium school on PSEB pattern. Presently Revd Avinash Kumar is the principal of the school since 2001. The school is functioning under a Registered Society: "St Thomas Educational and Research Society of the Diocese of Chandigarh, Church of North India" with Revd Joel V Mal as its president/chairman.
Arya Senior Secondary School, old Sabzi Mandi
The school was started in 1903 by principal Ram Lal. During his tenure, the school was raised from high school to higher secondary school. Right now, Vijay Pal Deora is the principal. It has more than a century-old colonial structured building with spacious playgrounds and facilities for library and laboratories.
The school had 90 regular staff members in 1967 and became an aided school in the same year. After the government banned the regular faculty, the number has come down to 24. The school has produced distinguished and prominent personalities such as GS Pathak, former vice-president of India; TN Raina, former commander in chief of Indian Army; Yash Pal Sharma, national-level cricket player among several others.
SCD Government College, College Road
SCD Government College, Ludhiana, was named after Satish Chander Dhawan, a renowned space scientist, who migrated to the US, and had a long and illustrious career at MIT, Massachusetts.
The college has 93-year-old building, hostel for boys and girls, classrooms, seminar halls, science laboratories and a bell.
This college came into its existence in 1920 after the recommendation of Presidency of Calcutta to cater to need of both urban and rural students' community. It started with an FA degree (first examination in arts) in 1920, followed by F Sc and later degree courses in arts and sciences were introduced in 1932.
The college started the postgraduate courses in languages and thereafter in economics, geography, mathematics and M Com in 1952. Now, it has introduced courses such as BCA, PGDCA, M Sc-IT, BBA and M Com (business innovation). The college aspires to start diploma courses in hospitality and tourism along with community college.
Famous alumni include the well-loved poet Sahir Ludhianvi, economist MS Gill, union HRD minister Kapil Sibal, retired police chief KPS Gill, film-director David Dhawan and several other personalities who have made their mark in different fields such as sports, administration, civil services, defence, industry, police etc.
Right now, Rajinder Singh is the principal who has taught in this college for 32 years and also completed his post-graduation from here in 1973-75.
