Security beefed up at rly station ahead of Diwali

With the festival of lights around the corner, a large number of police personnel have been deployed at the Ludhiana railway station to ensure foolproof security and to control the huge crowd thronging the station.

The city railway station could be seen abuzz with intensified security checks these days as the rush on the platform has increased manifolds.

Ludhiana has a major chunk of migrant population hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other parts of country and when some big festival approaches, migrants return to their native places for celebrations. The railway authorities have also introduced special trains to cater to huge rush.

Yashwant Singh, inspector, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Ludhiana, said: “We have tightened the security. Regular checks are being carried out in trains. Extra force has also arrived to increase the security at the station.”

He said the police were keeping a close eye on all activities on the platform and in trains. Dog squads had been deployed to check coaches and station areas. Security drills would also be conducted in the coming days, he said.

Inderjeet Singh, inspector, Government Railway Police (GRP), said police force had been deployed at all entry and exit points of the station. As a part of checks, commuters will be asked to pass through door frame metal detectors, he added.
