PU to ban entry of cars without stickers from August 29

Taking its first security measure after police approved September 7 as the election date, Panjab University decided to ban the entry of cars without stickers from August 29.

All PU departments were issued new stickers, triangular in shape, to be circulated among students and faculty.

Dean students’ welfare Navdeep Goyal said next not a single car without the new PU sticker will be allowed entry to the campus next Monday onwards.

“The main purpose is to reduce the number of vehicles on campus because we can see cars without stickers parked on the roadside daily. Secondly, we wish to ensure that no outsider brings a car inside the campus.”

He added that the new stickers were triangular instead of rectangular like the old ones because they were easier to detect on a car from a distance.

However, the DSW said there will be no extra security to ensure restrictions were followed and that the university will get additional security only around September 1. There was a plan to deploy 67 additional private security guards on the southern part of the campus, he added.

“If we get 67 additional security guards, we will be in a better position to adjust them throughout the campus. We will need 10-15 guards in the hostels while some will be required to man the gates and roads.”

Since PU authorities have not held a single review meeting to discuss the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, Goyal said, “The Lyngdoh guidelines are very clear and the day we announce their implementation on campus, students will know what to do and what not to do.”

He also added that CCTV cameras and other security cameras were already at place on campus.

The new PU stickers will not be applicable for two-wheelers. Outsiders will have to park their vehicles at the entrance gates to enter the campus.
