PSPCL employees’ agitation gets political support

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL ) employees’ and officers’ agitation over shifting of PSPCL complex office on Ferozepur Road has also attracted the support from political parties.

PSPCL co-ordination committee, which is representing the employees and officers associations of the corporation, is protesting against the government and PSPCL management for selling the prime land of PSPCL complex for down town project.

Sensing an opportunity, Atam Nagar MLA Simarjit Singh Bains also extended his support to the employees. He also participated in the last dharna staged by the co-ordination committee in PSPCL office.

Now, Marxist Communist Party of India- United (MCPI-U) general secretary Kuldip Singh and state secretary Pawan Kumar Kaushal have also extended the party support to these employees. Kuldip Singh said, “We strongly oppose the acquisition of PSPCL’s 32-acre prime land.”

He said these were public utility offices and families of many employees and officers also lived in this area. Taking land from them was like making the families homeless, he added.

Pawan Kumar said, “It’s ironical that Akali- BJP government has little regard for the most important power sector of economy and by ignoring the demand of power employees it wants to build the down town, which is of no use to the common man.”

MCPI-U extended full support to the genuine demands of power employees and urged the state government to stop this antiemployee idea and refrain from handing over the public property to private firms.

Committee member Sukhbir Singh said, “We welcome the agenda- based support, but politically-motivated support is not welcomed. We don’t want to lose this agitation in political wave, which will destroy our real motive.”

Kisan union members have also extended support to the committee that will hold a dharna at the PSPCL office on Wednesday to raise their demands.
