Parents worried over MC's plan to come up with parking at GSSS

School staff, and parents, whose wards are studying at Government Senior Secondary School, Multipurpose, are worried with the municipal corporation's decision to come up with a multi-level parking at the school.

This school was established in 1835 and till 1986 this school was being run in double shift. After 1986, the school started taking classes in single shift. The school is offering all streams, like science, commerce, vocational, humanities and providing education to 1031 students. Last year, three school students made it to the merit list and for the past six years, the commerce stream gives 100% result. Even students from vocational streams are performing exceptionally well for the past four years, along with science and humanities.

But according to parents, the step is not right. They say there are many other areas in the city, where the authorities can come up with multi-level parking, like the area near book market, which belongs to zila parishad and the Kesar Ganj Mandi. While the authorities said they were not going to take any action until they get consent, and it was only a proposal.

A parent Sunil Verma said, “Education is important then parking and the MC should find some other place for this multi-level parking. There is a parking place near book market, which belongs to Zila Parishad, where the authorities can construct the multi-level parking. I myself have studied at this school and now my son is studying here. Moreover, the multi-level parking of MC near Zone A office is lying vacant, so the authorities should create awareness among people to park their vehicles in the parking, instead of roadsides.”

Another parent Rajesh Sharma said, “Traffic is a big problem across the city, and coming up with multi-level parking in the school will not provide solution. This educational institute is here before independence and provides all facilities, including sufficient classrooms, laboratories, library, playground, toilets, faculty, and CCTV cameras, etc. So, I don't think there is a need to shift this school.”

When asked that authorities saying that they will not shift the school, Sharma said, “The authorities say so many things, but they act according to their will.”

A parent Vandana Karan said, “My kids are studying here and if MC is planning to come up with multi-level parking, then where our children will study? This school is the oldest school in the city and every facility is available here. The authorities are not taking action against the encroachments being done at the Kesar Ganj Mandi. Why don't the authorities come up with multi level parking there?”

While, another parent Rekhi Nayyar, said, “My daughter has completed her studies from this school and now my son is studying here. The teachers keep motivating the students to take part in co-curricular activities and students have been grabbing top positions both academically and in other activities. I think the authorities must find some other place for parking, as there is no need to change the location of the school which is 178-year-old.”

A parent Rani said, “If the authorities will come up with a multi-level parking here than we will sit on dharna, as there are other places, like Kesar Ganj Mandi and parking place near book market, where the authorities can come up with multi-level parking. Why do they want to raze some part of the school?"

However, the MC Commissioner Rahul Tewari reiterated, “We will not go ahead with anything on the school land, till the time we get consent from all quarters, including the concerned department and school authorities. It was just a proposal and not a final plan".
